Faucet Repair

Faucet repair, removal, and/or installation can be time-consuming, dirty, and a rather thankless task particularly when things don't go as planned. Whether you're removing shower faucets, are facing a Kohler k12172, Moen, Delta or some other brand of faucet repair, or you're simply trying to figure out how to stop that annoying drip drip drip, fixing a faucet can be an intimidating task.

If you're thinking about fixing your faucet, make sure that you know what type of faucet repair you'll be engaged in. Just knowing the manufacturer, whether it's single or dual handle, or whether it's a kitchen, lavatory, or bath faucet isn't enough information. It's also good to know whether you're planning on working on a rotating cylinder, disc, ball, compression, cartridge, or valve faucet, or something else entirely. Disc faucet repair may require a different set of tools than fixing a sill cock faucet, just as bathroom faucets are different from laundry room faucets. Just knowing the manufacturer may not give you enough information.

As an example, if you need to fix a leaking Delta faucet, you're probably working with either a rotating cylinder or a ball faucet, but it's still a good idea to know which of these two types of Delta faucet repair you're getting into so that you know what's involved before you start. A good place to start may be to look up your model on the manufacturer's website.

When doing so, make sure to double-check the type and brand of your faucet and make sure you have the correct tools and parts for the specific model. Most manufacturers have very specific parts they use for each of their products, and many will specify online what tools you may need for replacement. For instance, for the aforementioned Delta faucet, Delta indicates that you will need silicone, a 3/16" Allen wrench, a Phillips screwdriver, and a wrench. Keep in mind that this may be the tip of the iceberg; if you have rust or other corrosion or issues with your piping, you may very well need other tools and parts, not to mention learning about fixing threaded pvc pipe leaks and other sundries.

Faucet Repair Preparation

Working on a faucet requires a few fairly heavy tools, tools that often get slippery and wet. If you're thinking about tackling your faucet repair or faucet replacement project yourself, before you begin you may want to take some basic precautions to keep from damaging the your faucet the countertop surrounding your sink and the floor.

We suggest that consider laying down a towel in and around the sink and the faucet unit you're working on as well as another on the floor in front of the sink cabinet or pedestal. This can greatly reduce the likelihood that any dropped items will scratch the countertop or dent the floor. It also has the added benefit of catching small pieces before they fall down the drain.

You might want to place some tape around the ends of your wrenches or other tools you're using to stop them from scratching the finish on your countertop or faucet pieces.

It may also be a good idea to plan for a few extra towels to pad sharp edges when you're lying down on the floor with your back wedged into the closet under the sink. This can be particularly important with a bathroom faucet, which is often designed to fit into a minimal space and sometimes with bath faucets, where access panels can sometimes require some rather unusual contortions.

Of course, you can avoid all this trouble by calling the Plumbing Guys at 612-746-5545 and have us come out and tackle your faucet project for you, saving you time, saving you lots of effort, and saving you even more frustration. Oh yeah, and we clean up well. ;-)
