Bathtub Drain Replacement

Drains are probably one of the most ignored and taken for granted features in our home, until they don't work. Clogged drains can be a simple an annoyance or a downright disaster when everything floods out onto the floor. Even when the problem seems simple it can be complex. Installing a new bathtub drain or even just sealing a bathtub drain can be a nightmare if you don't know how or don't have the right tools.

The drain is one of the most important features of your home. Without drains your showers, your bathtubs, your toilets, and your sinks are useless ornaments. Not only that, drains are designed to be a line of defense against disease.

Consider this: Your home's drain is the first step to your community's sewer/septic system. The wastewater in your home carries filth and bacteria down its respective drain where all the working parts keep that wastewater from reentering your home. Should you have clogged drains you're stuck with that waste. Worse yet, if you have a leaking PVC pea trap connection, you could even be inviting foul-smelling sewer gases back into your home.

Bathtub drains are no different in this regard than any other, except that they're typically much harder to reach. And to compound the issue, it's often hard to even tell if there's a problem. After all, before you can get started fixing a leaking battub drain, you have to know it's leaking. If the bathtub is upstairs, your first indication of a problem may be a stain in your ceiling. If you have good ears -and- you're lucky, if you listen carefully you may be able to hear a slow drip drip drip on the ceiling while in the room below.

In one case, someone heard a sound like a muffled electrical short combined with rapid bubbles. When they looked up at their chandelier, they were horrified to see the globe had filled with water and somehow had not completely shorted out. The cause? A leak from the upstairs bathroom found the hole where the electrical cord went down to the chandelier.

Bathtub Drain Replacement

When you have a bathtub leak, often the only solution is bathtub drain replacement. Sometimes replacing a bathtub drain isn't necessary, and all that's needed is to seal the drain. In either case, you typically need access to the outer working of the drain. This is not a task for the faint of heart, and often requires removing a hard-to-reach access panel and several contortions if you're lucky, or perhaps drywall if you're not.

Clogged Drains

It's important to maintain your bathtub drains and keep them in good working order. There are a number of items you can use around the house to fix a slow drain, and prevent an unpleasant situation from becoming worse.

Most people will try a commercial plumbing product without giving a thought to what they might have in their home that might do the trick. These suggestions* may also help you save a few dollars if you've caught the problem early enough.

Home remedies disclaimer

Some moderately clogged drains can be fixed by pouring a half-cup of baking soda followed by a half-cup of vinegar down the clogged drain. The downside to this remedy is it can take up to three hours to effectively work, and the combination of the ingredients can create quite a foamy, smelly mess.

If you know the drain is clogged by grease, you may want to try pouring a half-cup of salt down the drain. Follow this with a half-cup of baking soda and a teakettle full of boiling water. For the best results you should let this concoction sit overnight.

If all else fails, there's always the plunger method which usually works best with two people. One should hold a wet rag against the overflow opening while the other fills the tub or basin with enough water to cover the plunger head. Sliding the plunger over the clogged drain and rapidly jerking it up and down about a dozen times should do the trick. You may have to do this two or three times before the drain is completely clog-free.

While these methods may help keep your drains in working order, let's face it, we don't all have the time to take such measures. Eventually you may be in a situation where your slow bath tub drain turns into installing a new bathtub drain.
